Callaway Golf to lay off 700 workers
Article Abstract:
Callaway Golf Co., based in California, will retrench 700 workers, or 24% of its work force, at the end of 1998. The move, which follows the elimination of 300 temporary positions in July 1998, comes at a time when the company starts concentrating on its core operations of manufacturing premium golf clubs. Aside from the discontinuation of golf-book publishing, Callaway's back-to-basics moves include the integration of its Odyssey Golf unit into the parent firm and discontinuation of such ventures as interactive golf sites and driving ranges. The restructuring and the layoffs are aimed at giving Callaway $40 million in annual savings.
