Keeping it in the family
Article Abstract:
Swiss private banks or 'banque privee' or 'Privatbank' are banking institutions formed as a sole or joint proprietorship or as a partnership. The owners assume unlimited liability and are liable for the financial obligations of the bank to the extent of their personal fortunes. Switzerland currently has 16 private banks and most have been doing business for the past 200 years. For instance, Wegelin & Co. started in 1741 while Landolt & Cie was established in 1780. Conservative estimates put the value of assets managed by Swiss private banks at three million million Swiss francs.
