Keeping romance alive
Article Abstract:
A 3.8 million pounds sterling Medieval restoration of Ightham Mote manor house is expected to be completed during the year 2000 after almost ten years of work. The manor house was originally built in 1340, using traditional Kentish methods. The conservation team decided to keep the house open to the public during restoration work, although an exhibition was installed to inform visitors of the work taking place. The work allowed modern-day building safety elements to be incorporated into the mainly timber frame structure, making it safer for the future.

Environmental improvement gives block a new image
Article Abstract:
Work by ECD Architects to refurbish Meath House, an eight-storey block of 44 two-bedroom maisonettes in Lambeth, south London, has focused on reducing carbon dioxide emissions from the building. The company selected 30mm-thick external polystyrene insulation for the external beams and soffits, and new double-glazed windows and gas-fired central heating were installed. The roof was replaced with a barrel-vault form.
