Kinder, gentler image; polls validate Islamic party's tactics
Article Abstract:
The tolerant regionalistic political approach of the Parti Islam (Pas) is succeeding in Malaysia. Pas won the by-elections held in Jerai, Kedah, in Mar 1992, and in Jerlun in Dec 1991. Malaysia's northern states, particularly the Kelantan area, are becoming political bastions of the Pas party. Malaysian Chinese are also openly supporting the Pas government. This increasing popularity of the Pas is troubling the United Malays National Organisation (Umno) dominated government. Umno insists that Pas stands for extremist Islam that could endanger the existing economic and social status in Malaysia.

Battle for the margins
Article Abstract:
The ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO) employed several political tricks to win the elections for an assembly seat for the State of Trengganu in Bukit Payung over the opposition Islamic Party (PAS). Knowing that the region supports PAS because of its strong religious beliefs, UMNO brought in non-residents to beef up its supporters and counter PAS's hometown advantage. UMNO's tactics proved to be successful as it gained a 389-vote majority in the resulting elections.
