Kiwi fruits: New Zealand's growth at last looks sustainable
Article Abstract:
New Zealand's economy expanded by 3% in 1992 and is expected to keep to that pace in 1993. Finance Minister Ruth Richardson cites a 10% rise in non-food exports and a low inflation rate of 1% as further evidence of the country's economic health in spite of the world-wide recession. She attributes this prosperity to the economic reforms enacted in 1984-90 by the Labour government and since 1990 by her National government. These supply-side reforms include the deregulation of the financial and labor markets.

Article Abstract:
Investors should carefully analyze the major economies and their chances of recovery before making any investment decisions. Japan's economy is expected to shrink by 1.8% in 1992. The US economy has recovered from the recession but interest rates may be increased from their present level. Germany's economy is experiencing the worst slowdown and interest rates have remained high. Unlike their Western counterparts, Asian markets are the more attractive investment areas.

Much ado about Lippo
Article Abstract:
The Republican party is hoping to gain political advantage by raising doubts about some of the more than $1 million which the Democratic party has received since 1992 from Indonesia's Riady family and its Lippo Group associates. Some Republicans are even claiming that the donations prompted Pres Bill Clinton to take a less firm line towards Indonesia. Indonesians claim that US views of the Riady family and its businesses are misguided.
