Miti city down under: a Japanese bureaucrat imagined a hi-tech city for Australia
Article Abstract:
Australia's plans to develop a 'multifunction polis' (MFP) are encountering financial and implementation problems. The MFP, proposed by the Japanese in Jan 1987, was envisioned as a technologically focused city in Australia. The city of Adelaide was chosen as the site of the city which Australian officials hope, will be inured with Japanese investment. However, faulty planning by the Australian implementors initially disenchanted Japanese investors. The stringent Japanese expectations for concrete plans and Australian investment have been tempered with continuing involvement by leading Japanese industry and trade officials.

Annual revenues in the US market alone reach $600 million and chip manufacturers are positioning themselves to capture their share of the market. Even Japanese companies are showing interest in the programmable logic business which is expected to top $1 billion in 1993 with anannual growth rate of 30%.

War on malaria
Article Abstract:
The struggle to eradicate mosquito-caused malaria has continued since the parasite was discovered in 1879. The organism has since developed immunity against the chloroquine drug and the mosquito is now surviving massive doses of insecticide sprays. Because of these developments, different research is being conducted to combat the disease in various stages. An encouraging advancement is the link-up of Saramane Pty of Australia, Hoffman-La Roche of Switzerland and the Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research to develop a more effective vaccine out of malaria antigens.
