Korea Tobacco makes debut
Article Abstract:
The public offering of Korea Tobacco and Ginseng on Oct 8, 1999 has made it the eighth biggest firm listed on the Korean stock market. Its size, coupled with its debt-free record has made its shares very popular with local investors. However, despite these attractions, foreign investors are still wary of purchasing stocks of Korea Tobacco. The reason for this is that the overseas fund managers want solid guarantees from the government that it will make importation of tobacco, along with the raising of prices, easier.

Structural problems emerge
Article Abstract:
Taiwan is undergoing an economic slowdown with exports having decreased 22.6% year-to-year in May and imports also having fallen 29.6%, with the slowest year-to-year growth of any major country in Asia excluding Japan. The source of problems is competition with China and slow demand for electronics, which make up 35% of exports.
