Kosovo on hold
Article Abstract:
The failure of ethnic Albanians and Serbs to reach an agreement to end the conflict in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, involves a loss of face for western countries involved, but the attempt was worthwhile. The ethnic Albanians refused to agree to the peace proposals and this does not help ethnic Albanians in danger in Kosovo. Ground troops are likely to be needed in Kosovo, and this means that there may be casualties. There are hopes of an agreement at another meeting, and Russia may have to be persuaded to put pressure on the Serbs to accept such an agreement.

Kosovo's elusive peace
Article Abstract:
An attempt has been made to reach an agreement between ethnic Albanians and Serbs over the conflict in Kosovo, Yugoslavia. The two sides have met in Paris, France, and have agreed to seek a settlement in principle, and plan a new meeting in March 1999, but have initally failed to reach a settlement. Kosovar leader, Adem Demaci, was not present at the meeting, and this is seen as one reason for the failure. There is concern that maverick groups could spoil any settlement that is achieved.

Next, please: Bosnia & Hercegovina
Article Abstract:
Yet another part of what used to be Yugoslavia is seeking independence. Bosnia and Hercegovina, with a potentially explosive ethnic mix of Muslims, Serbs, and Croats, recently voted for independence. The Croats and Muslims carried the vote, while the Serbs would be a distinct minority.
