There are concerns in Europe that East German membership on the board of the Bundesbank may somehow create more economic instability through more liberal monetary policies. Most believe though that the East German economists will be more conservative than expected.

Germany's Bundesbank still wields extraordinary power as it decides the nation's monetary policy and interest rates, effecting all of Europe. It usually enacts policies to limit inflation, which creates turmoil in the European exchange rate mechanism.
