The acquisition of Heitmann allows Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products (LHSP) to enrich its translation software products department, whose name changes to become a department specializing in 'multi-language documentary solutions'. The department now combines Heitmann's skills in document creation with LHSP's language abilities and technologies in automated translation and continuous dictation software. The Belgian speech and language technology specialist will pay US$ 35mn for the acquisition of Heitmann, a German multi-language technical publisher worth US$ 30mn in turnover. The price includes US$ 15mn in LHSP ordinary shares and US$ 20mn in debt repayment.

In a move to supply its markets in Oriental Europe, the Belgian carpets manufacturing group AWI (Associated Weavers International) has just taken over the tufted department of its Czech colleague, Intex. Though the operation is a minor one for AWI, it will allow the Belgian company to reinforce its presence in the Czech Republic, and also in Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Russia, etc., the other markets to which Intex supplies its low-price tufted carpets. Price of the acquisition (in cash) was not disclosed.

Bridgedale (99%) and Pex Sox (1%), subsidiaries of UK concern Pex Plc, bought out Bonnetterie de Dottignies. The latter produces adult-socks for the Belgian and French markets, in particular for the French sports shop D cathlon and the mail order company 3 Suisses. Bonnetterie de Dottignies has an output capacity of 2mn pairs of socks. In 1997 the company reported a turnover of BFr 18mn and a profit of BFr 11,000. * *
