In order to support the development of wind energy in the Spanish region of Navarra, Energia Hidroelectrica de Navarra (EHN, 37% owned by Iberdrola) will acquire a 50% stake of Desarrollo de Energias Renovables de Navarra (Derna), 100% owned by Desarrollo de Energias Renovables (Dersa). Both EHN and Dersa will join forces to build and run five wind energy plants which will jointly develop a 164 megawatt power and will require Pta 21,200mn investments. These plants are San Esteban (60.62 megawatt and Pta 7,900mn investments), Caluengo (50 megawatt and Pta 6,892mn), Uzkita (24.24 megawatt and Pta 3,231mn), Monte Esquinza (15.75 megawatt and Pta 2,108mn) and Altos de Ciriqui (13.5 megawatt and Pta 1,844mn). Iberdrola will distribute the electricity generated by the plants. *

Telefonica se da dos anos para renovar la direccion

As part of its plan to bring forward management skills allowing the company to reach a world-wide ranking of fifth place, Spanish telecoms company Telefonica is reportedly planning to renovate top management. The president of the company, Juan Villalonga, has asked executives to identify those employees between the ages of 30 and 40 who have the potential to become part of a new management team over the next two years.

Spanish rail operator Renfe is predicting that by the year 2003 its long-distance units, known as Grandes Lineas, will reach a break even point. The company improved loss previsions in 1997 by Pta 2,500mn. The number of passengers on Grandes Lineas has reached nearly 4mn, up 11.4%. Revenues have reached Pta 13,152mn, up 11.5%. Sales through agencies are now at 38%, compared to 22% a year an a half ago.
