Many Labour politicians now sprinkle their speeches with free-market references to 'opportunity,' and 'individuals.' Both Bill Clinton's moderate rhetoric and electoral victory, and John Major's upset victory, have spurred Labor leaders such as Jack Straw to reconsider collectivism.

Liberalism rediscovered: the roots of new Labour
Article Abstract:
Tony Blair deserves tremendous credit for making the Labour Party and liberalism ascendant in British politics again, even if his viewpoints differ somewhat from classic Labour policy. Blair's liberalism makes more of an emphasis on personal responsibility.

The appeal of the Labor Party is in its objective to help the poor, and such help must come from the middle class. The reluctance of the middle class stems not from apathy but from a common belief that the government is incompetent.
