Article Abstract:
The engineering firm, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has targeted 5000 mw of power generation capacity by the 2005 AD. L&T proposes to foray into the power sector through independent power projects (IPPs). L&T has chalked out plans for adding 1,935 mw of power in the next two years. Around 1,000 mw will be used for captive consumption. The power projects will be funded through internal accruals. L&T proposes to achieve financial closure for 800 mw of power in 1998-99 and 1,135 mw of the power during 2000-2001 AD. A 500 mw power project will be set up for the Bhilai Steel Plant. Of the 500 mw, 200 mw will be offered to the Madhya Pradesh power grind while 80 mw will be used for captive consumption by L&T's cement unit. The IPPs will form part of L&T's engineering and construction division. They are expected to contribute 15 percent to the total turnover by 2005 AD. (ag)
