Lane Kirkland
Article Abstract:
Lane Kirkland was a labor leader who lost his post as leader of the American Federation of Labor following a revolt by member unions. They argued that he was too preoccupied with foreign affairs and did not pay enough attention to a drop in union membership. Kirkland came from a family of southern aristocrats. He was successful in his approach to foreign labor issues and gained friends on the political right. The Republicans were still more anti-labor union than the Democrats, and Bill Clinton once offered Kirkland the post of ambassadoe to Poland, which he declined.

Follow the flag of convenience: shipping
Article Abstract:
The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) gained some control over the shipping industry's use of 'flags of convenience,' but the union was not able to eliminate the practice, which allows firms to hire low-wage workers and pay low taxes. However, the ITF's influence may be waning.
