Article Abstract:
The abolition of duty-free trade in the European Union, which is due to take place on Jun 30, 1999, will have a negative impact on ferry companies, airport operators, airlines and the tobacco and drinks industries. There is considerable pressure from some sources for duty-free trade to continue, with claims that its abolition will lead to the loss of between 16,000 and 23,000 jobs in the UK by 2005 and to the loss of between 112,000 and 147,000 jobs in Europe. However, the European Commission is standing firm against calls for the abolition of duty-free trade to be delayed.

Bush, Republican governor Texas has moved away from the Democrats and toward the Republicans in the 1990s, and Bullock was an old-style Democratic power broker. A conservative consensus was achieved in Texas as the state moved away from being dominated by one party. Bush may not achieve such good relations with Democrats at national level, and he has to avoid partisan rancour if he is to broaden his appeal.

Article Abstract:
Chinese Communist Party chief Jiang Zemin ordered the withdrawal of the military from management of its business empire. This is likely to lead to the closure of thousands of the military's businesses, with others sold off. The major earners are those involved in telecommunications, securities trading, transport and property development, and the question is how much compensation will be provided by central government for lost business revenues.
