Layout designs in cellular manufacturing
Article Abstract:
A case study was conducted to examine the performance of a multi-objective model in a food manufacturing and packaging company. The objective of the study was to demonstrate the process of developing the final intercell layout designs by giving multiple layout configurations and showing the impact of each design on the material handling cost at every stage. Results provide evidence that the solutions offer a safer shop floor and substantial reductions in material handling cost, waste, need for large capital investment and the number of lift-trucks needed on the shop floor.

Application of multidimensional scaling techniques to facilities layout
Article Abstract:
The application of non-metric multidimensional scaling (MDS) methods can provide tools to support facilities layout decisions in the manufacturing and service environment. These aids include scatter diagrams that show the placement of facilities on a site. Besides providing a cost-effective and convenient means of obtaining a robust solution, non-metric MDS techniques are flexible because they are amenable to different types of layout problems, different data inputs and different distance measures.

Quantitative and qualitative indices for the plant layout evaluation problem
Article Abstract:
The generic approaches for developing quantitative and qualitative indices for the plant layout problem are presented. Also, new indices for the flow criterion group and environment criterion group are provided. One index for environment criterion is chosen as example. In addition, the indices for six flow criteria, namely clearness, space sufficiency and utilization, aisle, distance and volume density, robustness of equipment capacity, and building expansion are demonstrated with examples.
