Sales of over-the-counter (OTC) health care products in the Eastern European markets is governed by the health of regional economies. Total sales of OTC health care products in the market amounted to $1,021 mil in 1996, down by 36% from sales in 1992. The decrease is due to the struggling economies in Russia, the Ukraine and Bulgaria, with consumer purchases in Russia and Ukraine falling by as much as 70%. Vitamins and dietary supplements account for fastest sales, amounting to $267.7 mil in 1996. The Eastern Europe OTC health care products market is forecasted to reach $2,204 mil by year 2001, driven by the changes in the health services delivery in the region.

The vitamins and dietary supplements sector accounts for most of the market's revenues while the medicated skincare sector is the fastest growing. The market is expected to grow by 20.5% at 1995 prices in 1996.
