Lehman settles lawsuit, closing a chapter in China

Lehman Brothers Inc. (Lehman) and China International United Petroleum and Chemicals Co. (Unipec) have agreed to settle their dispute over losses incurred from foreign currency trades and interest-rate swaps. Lehman had sued Unipec in 1994 to collect some $44 million in debts arising from derivatives transactions in 1993 and early 1994. The details of the settlement were not disclosed but both companies expressed satisfaction with the outcome.

Wheelock Natwest union may be headed for a split

Wheelock and Co. and National Westminster Bank Ltd. are planning to close down their joint venture company Wheelock NatWest Ltd. Executives, however, report that shareholders remain optimistic about the investment bank and are seeking ways to make it grow. The investment bank, which was established in 1994, recently shut down its fund management business. Meanwhile, NatWest Markets is considering to buy out Wheelock's share of the bank.
