Liberal arts: Jakarta exhibition spotlights artists from developing countries
Article Abstract:
An Indonesian art exhibit challenges current ideas about contemporary art in the developing world and has sparked a movement ot build a national museum. 'Contemporary Art of the Non-Aligned Countries' opens on Apr 28 in Jakarta in the renovated government-owned gallery Wisma Seni. The exhibit includes more than 400 works of art, and has stirred debate among the artists themselves. Some welcome the attention, but others think the government is using them to further its own agenda. Indonesian art is now scattered and ill-preserved.

Velvet fist: Jakarta opts for subtlety in its efforts to subdue Timor
Article Abstract:
Indonesia continues to have difficulty assimilating East Timor, the former Portuguese colony that it seized in 1976. Jose Alexandre 'Xanana' Gusmao, leader of the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Fretilin), has been arrested and tried, but a new and more militant leader, identified as 'Mauhunu,' is carrying on the fight. The warfare and Indonesia's effort to crush Fretilin have undermined Timorese society. However, the Indonesian military has tried to improve the situation by making itself less obtrusive.
