Lies, damned lies, and ... statistics
Article Abstract:
Congressional Republicans are roundly dismissing the proposal of the Census Bureau to use statistical sampling methods in its year 2000 census. The Census Bureau believes that the statistical sampling method would provide a better results than an actual count, which is time consuming, costly, and inaccurate: the non-sampling method used in 1990 missed an estimated 4.7 mil people, most likely concentrated in the inner cities, where non-responding renters and ethnic minorities are more populous. Republican opposition to the sampling method stems from their fears that a more accurate count will uncover more support for the Democratic Party.

Commerce and contestability
Article Abstract:
The abolition of trade barriers would not necessarily lead to free trade due to monopoly power, with private sector trade barriers operating rather than barriers set up by governments. Competition policy has international implications, and some analysts argue that there us a need to coordinate national policies. This is true for a number of areas such as airlines, where alliances may have different impacts in different markets, and cartels, where evidence mayhave to be gathered from a number of countries.
