Turkey is starting to respond more forcibly to guerrilla raids by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), the Kurd Marxists who are fighting for autonomy in the southeast region of the country. Turkey refuses to make any concessions to the Kurds, which some feel would limit the conflict.

The Liberal Democratic Party lost its clear majority in Jun 1993 elections, but it will still probably head a coalition government. It is clear from the results that Japanese voters are unhappy with the Liberal Democratic Party, but they do not want to upset the status quo.
