Lights, camera, no action?
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party seemed to be strongly committed to the film industry when it came to power in May 1997. However, promised initiatives have not been put into practice, and the industry's future remains uncertain. There is controversy surrounding plans to bring all the film quangos together into a single super-quango known as British Film, due to be launched in Apr 2000. Furthermore, the Dept of Culture, Media and Sport may have been misguided in deciding to award production franchises worth 92 million pounds sterling over six years to three new consortia.

Is there life after steel?
Article Abstract:
The decision of Broken Hill Proprietary (BHP) to close its Newcastle steel plant is being interpreted as indicative of Australia's problems and a major factor in making them worse. BHP has been operating the Newcastle plant since 1915 and the closure plans are set for 1999. The move is seen to affect around 6,000 employees directly and indirectly and is seen to cost the country A$750 million in exports per year.
