Live and let live: allow Asians to choose their own course
Article Abstract:
Human rights and freedom of the press are Western ideas alien to Asia. Asians and Westerners can overcome this difference in outlook and discuss human rights profitably only if five points are observed by both sides. These points are: respect for each other; the admission that economic growth is of paramount importance to the developing world; the realization by Westerners that toppling Asian governments would not effect instant reform; agreement on what constitutes basic civilized behavior; and allowing each country to decide for itself how free its press should be.
