Article Abstract:
Local issues have predominated in debates held during the election for mayor in San Francisco, and this reflects concern about conditions in the city. No candidate achieved over 50% of votes cast, so a run-off will be held on dec 14 1999. Incumbent, Willie Brown, was thought likely to be re-elected easily, but a debate has been spraked off by the entry of Tom Ammiano into the race, though too late to be an official candidate. Rents have risen and evictions have increased, while there is less public housing available. Internet and high-tech workers are commuting from San Francisco, and the number of well paid jobs in San Francisco has dropped.
