Local news reports sting American Rice amid talks
Article Abstract:
American Rice Inc's export quota talks with the Vietnamese government may be jeopardized by local negative news reports about the company's alleged bias against Vietnamese workers and anomalous overseas bank accounts. The news reports cite state inspection findings that are nearly six months old. The company is questioning why these unfavorable comments emerged at a time when American Rice is negotiating with the Vietnamese government to increase export quotas. The company is also negotiating to amend terms of its joint venture American Rice-Vinafood Co contract.

Vietnam opens to private rice exports; in a first step, two firms get rights to sell small amounts overseas
Article Abstract:
Vinh Phat and Thanh Hoa are two Vietnamese firms that have been granted rights by the Vietnamese government to engage in the export of rice. The move is part of a tentative move by Vietnam, the second-largest rice exporter in the world, to open its vast rice-exporting trade to private companies. The choice of the two firms is attributed to their small size which does not pose a likely threat to Vietnam's monopolies.
