Largest private financed project in Italy
Article Abstract:
Agreements on the financing of Italy's biggest combined gasification and power project, Sarlux, were signed in December 1996. The plant will generate 550 MW of electricity from gas from refining residues and is due to come into operation in 1999. Saras, the owner of the local Sardinian refinery, lead the project for which a total debt of approximately $1.3 billion has been raised. The Sarlux project is one of 11 large independent power producer projects (IPPs) in Italy. IPPs will continue to be important in the Italian electricity industry but expansion in the immediate future may be limited.
