Cambodia had banned the export of timber in 1995, to stem widespread deforestation, but imports to Thailand continued through 1996. The IMF and other international lenders have tied their loans to enforcement of the timber-trade ban, and Cambodia seems to be beginning to comply.

Article Abstract:
A proposal is being considered that would force imported wood that came from tropical forests to be labeled as such. There is concern that developing countries that do not have the same environmental standards are not effectively managing their forests.

Article Abstract:
Countries that produce lumber from tropical rain forests are being forced into managing their forests resources better by trade controls and the International Tropical Timber Agreement. Many countries will only buy timber from managed forests.
