Logica seeks buys in U.S., posts 49% jump in profit

Logica PLC of London, United Kingdom, has reported a 49% increase in annual pretax profit to 41.8 million pounds sterling ($69.3 million) in the year ended June 30, 1998, from 28.2 million pounds sterling. Logica's sales rose to 473 million pounds sterling for the year, a 40% hike from 338.5 million pounds sterling in the previous year. Logica Chief Executive Martin Read said the company will take advantage of the growing global demand for information-technological services by continuing its series of acquisitions.

News Corp. has reported a significant rise in net profits to A$1.68 billion or $1 billion for the fiscal 1998 ending June 30, 1998, compared to net profits of A$720 million in the previous fiscal year. News attributes the significant profit increase to the success of the movies titled Titanic and The Full Monty, and the conversion of US dollar earnings in terms of Australian dollars. News also reported improvements in financial returns from its core businesses as well as in some of its loss-making operations.
