Looking beyond the end of the earth
Article Abstract:
The dry mountainous South Pole is excellent for astronomical observations. The Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica (CARA) is setting up three programs there. The first is Cosmic Background Radiation Anisotrophy (COBRA) to be followed by The Antarctica Sub-millimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory (AST/RO) and The South Pole Infrared Explorer (SPIREX).

Biodivisive: the earth conference
Article Abstract:
Delegates debated the international implications of biological diversity and biotechnology in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during the Earth Summit there. The treaty which resulted gives developing countries royalty rights to biotechnological developments. It will probably be vetoed by the US.

Visions of earth
Article Abstract:
Observing the Earth from outer space provides much needed knowledge, and more satellites are being planned for that purpose. NASA's Earth Observing System should provide a wealth of information on global warming and other environmental issues.
