Mountains of dust
Article Abstract:
The Vietnamese government's efforts to resettle slash-and-burn farmers and to legislate against log exports have had little success. Lack of funds for building roads, irrigation networks and schools has caused 70% of 1.9 million resettled shifting cultivators to revert back to the slash-and-burn farming method. The resulting deforestation of 9.7 million hectares of mountains in northern Vietnam has been blamed for devastating flash floods, soil erosion and siltation of irrigation systems. Laws have had limited effects due to the need for farm land and for revenues from log exports.

Hit the power switch: Taiwan's Taian Electric tries to keep up with Malaysia's surging economy
Article Abstract:
Malaysia attracts Taiwanese investors who want to expand their companies into Asean and are seeking strong infrastructure and a favorable political and governmental structure. They also cite Malaysia's low inflation, rapidly growing consumer clout, and the many languages spoken there. The chief drawbacks are a result of its rapid growth: a tight labor market driving up wages, difficulties getting work permits for some foreigners, and a crowded though modern port and airport. GDP and foreign investment continue to soar.

Ring in the old: voters extend the PAP's lease on power yet again
Article Abstract:
Singapore has held its nine-day election campaign with the people voting the People's Action Party (PAP) back into power. Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong believes the result shows that Singaporeans reject western style liberal democracy. No new measures were promised during the campaign although there are expected to be small changes in the cabinet, which is of interest to Singaporean businessmen and foreign investors. It is also thought that Goh will focus on the language debate which dominated the campaign.
