Lopsided trade brings current account deficit
Article Abstract:
Germany's trade deficit with Japan has increased steadily since 1980, a fact that confuses some people due to a 30% real appreciation of the yen against the German mark in the same time period. The Bundesbank cites Japan's bureaucratic hurdles to importing and the consumers' preference for domestic goods as the reason, along with a Japanese recession that has hurt the sale of German products there. Japan has invested large amounts of money into German business, and has become one of Germany's few foreign creditors.
