Lord Killanin
Article Abstract:
Lord Killanin became International Olympic Commission president in 1972 and expressed a hope for a reduction in political and nationalistic considerations in the games. The Olympic Games of 1976 and 1980 were marked by political issues such as the boycott by the US in 1980s after Russian invaded Afghanistan. Killanin favored some payments for athletes, though he also wanted them to retain their amateur status. He possessed a patrician manner and came from a grand family in Ireland, studying at Eton, England, and later at Cambridge University.
