The stock of Bre-X Minerals, a Canadian mining company, increased rapidly on news of the discovery of a huge gold deposit in Borneo, and then fell even more rapidly as independent findings cast doubt on the extent of the deposit. The experience is expected to make future mining investors wary.

Investors believe that prices will increase as mining interests reduce their production in response to declining metals prices. While mining firms do exert some influence over gold prices, prices are far more sensitive to world affairs and international economic conditions.
