Low-energy housing from standard specifications
Article Abstract:
Developer, Norman Beddington and architect, Martin Dyke-Coomes are planning an ecological housing development. The 26 houses will be designed to conserve energy and water and to make the minimum demand on resources. Energy conservation and use of solar and other renewable sources of energy is a basic tenet of the design. Other fundamentals are water recycling, basement storage and utility space and the use of environmentally friendly materials. Planning permission has been refused for the development but there will be an appeal.

Revitalising social housing
Article Abstract:
The design of new social housing in the UK reflects current interest in reducing costs. Occupants of social housing have no control over the design of their homes, but housing associations should be aware that lack of attention to good design can cause problems in the future. However, lack of funding has forced some housing associations to introduce innovative design strategies which may have long-term benefits. Examples include designs for car-free developments and new approaches to communal facilities.
