Okinawa vexes Japan and U.S
Article Abstract:
The US military presence on the Japanese island of Okinawa remains a very sensitive issue. Indeed, it threatens to cast a shadow over the entire military alliance between the US and Japan. There are few indications of a solution being reached in the near future, particularly as tension rises over plans by the Japanese government to construct a heliport off the city of Nago, Japan, in northern Okinawa. If Governor Masahide Ota decides against this plan, then Japan and the US will find it very hard to meet their commitment to return as much land as possible to Okinawa.

Sino-Russian pact a good sign
Article Abstract:
The recent statement of a new 'strategic relationship' issued by China and Russia in Apr 1996 came shortly after the US and Japan reaffirmed their mutual security treaty. The new relationship between China and Russia will note result in anything like the enormous economic ties that exist between Japan and the US that have lasted for 50 years. The Sino-Russia is significant, however, because it shows that the two former enemies are taking the first steps toward becoming peaceful neighbors.
