MANDYA SCIENTISTS DEVELOP 2 NEW SUGARCANE VARIETIES
Article Abstract:
VC Farm of Mandya, a regional research station, has developed Co- 8371 and CoVC-89249 varieties of sugarcane. In July 1998, the Co- 8371 variety will be presented before the State Variety Evaluation Committee for its approval. The CoVC-89249 variety, which will undergo farm trials, will be launched in another two years. Co-8371 offers per hectare yield of 190 tonnes as against 175 tonnes from Co-62175 and 155 tonnes from Co-7804 varieties. Co-8371 has shown a 20.9 percent more sugar yield as compared to Co-62175 and 30.39 percent more as compared to that from Co-7804 tonnes. (ag)

The decrease in sugarcane cultivated area from 2.25 lakh hectares in 1995-96 to 1 lakh hectares in 1998-99 will severely affect Punjab's sugar industry. The state has 14 sugar mills in the co-operative sector and 7 mills in the private sector. The area under sugarcane cultivation has fallen due to the difficulties encountered by the farmers in marketing their produce on time and the faulty cane price payments during the 1996-97 crushing season. KARNATAKA PLANS TO SET UP SUGAR CORPORATION
Article Abstract:
The Karnataka State Government is contemplating to set up a corporation for sugar similar to the one in Tamil Nadu to promote sugar industry. It is also planning to set up a sugarcane research institute called Karnataka Sugar Institute. The institute will have two centres located at Belgaum and Mandya. Karnataka has a total cane crushing capacity of 126.45 lakh tonnes a season and its annual sugar output is 275 lakh tonnes. (rk)
