Moorage Stanley Dean Whitter (MSDW) has assigned a high rating to India's performance in the Asia Pacific region. The investment bank's research team has also reiterated MSDW's position in India in its Asia-Pacific model portfolio of 12 percent as against Asia-Pacific current weightage of 8.9 percent. According to MWDW's report, India's market valuations are encouraging with technology, finance and consumer firms witnessing growth. Only the two sectors, commodity and agriculture sector have indicated poor growth. Taking into account the overall results in the first three months of 1998- 99 which have showed an earnings growth of 8.7 percent over 1997-98, the report has projected a 10 percent growth in earnings in for 1998-99. INDIA POSTS $4.5-BILLION BoP SURPLUS FOR 1997-98
Article Abstract:
India's balance of payment showed a surplus of $4.5 billion in 1997-98 but it is about 44 percent less than the surplus of $6.8 billion posted in 1996-97. Data released by the Directorate- General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics sows that the country's exports increased by 1.5 percent to $33.98 billion in 1997-98 while imports increased by 4.2 percent to $40.78 billion. The current account deficit was 1.7 percent of the gross domestic product at $6.47 billion in 1997-98. (khr)

CISCO TO SET UP NETWORKING SCHOOLS IN INDIA
Article Abstract:
The $8.5 billion Cisco Systems Inc (CSI) of USA launched its Cisco Networking Academy Program during September 1997 in India. Under the programme, CSI plans to set up several computer networking schools in India. CSI is holding talks with the Indian government and various agencies for the project. The programme is meant to educate and certify high school and college students in computer networking. (gs)
