MTNL PLANS TO USE WIRELESS LOCAL LOOP, FISL
Article Abstract:
The Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) plans to use Wireless in Local Loop (WLL) and Fibre In Subscribers Loop (FISL) technologies for its network. It plans to use the 2 technologies in 10 percent of the total connections by the year 2000. It is likely to invest Rs1,900 crore on its modernisation programme. It has called for tenders to buy WLL equipment with a capacity of 50,000 telephone lines. It is likely to connect 250 major commercial complexes with fibre optic cable by the end 1998-99. It is trying to reduce the fault rate to 4 per 100 from 25 per 100. It is likely to offer smart card services by the end of 1998. (rk)

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) has launched the toll-free facility in Mumbai and Delhi where calls to a specific number are paid by the called party, not the caller. Such services are provided to companies who install a particular toll-free number where data is stored for easy access. This service would help companies in better customer service by answering queries of customers all over the country from one place promptly. (nr)
