MUMBAI PORT TRUST: GEARING UP FOR THE CHALLENGE AHEAD
Article Abstract:
In an interview, the chairman of Mumbai Port Trust (MBPT), Mr Arun K Mago, has revealed that the total cargo handled by the port in 1997-98 declined to 32 million tonnes from 33.7 million tonnes in 1996-97. Of the total cargo, POL products accounted for 16.5 million tonnes and around 8 million tonnes were containers. The target fixed for 1998-99 is 34 million tonnes. The total traffic handled by the port declined due to lower POL traffic, following a fall in crude oil production at the Bombay High. Many shipping lines have shifted to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, which has modern equipment, larger draft and lesser turnaround time. Around 60 percent of the cargo handled by MBPT is containerised. The future plans of the MBPT include electronic data interchange network, second chemical jetty in New Pir Pau and another project in Butcher Island, which is the oil terminal of MBPT. (gsh)
