Vanguard names new CEO

Vanguard International Semiconductor Corp and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, which has a 27 interest in Vanguard, have designated Rick Tsai as the former's new president, replacing CY Lu who will assume the post of senior adviser. Tsai's appointment is the second time in eight months that Vanguard has appointed a new CEO. The move comes as Vanguard struggles to reverse a loss of $155.2 million in 1998, one of Taiwan's largest corporate losses ever. The loss was attributed to a decline in memory-chip prices in 1998 in the face of oversupplies and lackluster demand.

Macronix is scaling back

Article Abstract:

Macronix International Co., a semiconductor manufacturer based in Taiwan, decided to scale back its investment plans of NT$11 billion for 1998 as it face declining prices and an industry oversupply. The company modified its plans into spending NT$3 billion, instead, and none of the investment will be allocated to plant expansion. The company is the second Taiwan chipmaker, the first was Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., to announce such move. More semiconductor companies are expected to make the same moves in the coming days.
