Opponent groups doubt Malaysia's threat claims
Article Abstract:
Malaysia says it has foiled a takeover attempt by a militant Islamic group, but critics of the government say that Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is simply using this as an excuse to squelch legitimate opposition parties. Many ethnic Malays who supported Mohamad in the election in 1999 have now transferred their allegiance to the Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS). Article provides discussion of some of the arrests and reactions to them.

Malaysia ventures into the unknown
Article Abstract:
The uncertainty over the future leader of Malaysia is growing just as the transition to a new leader begins. Heavy damage has been inflicted by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's accusations against his former chosen successor Anwar Ibrahim. He failed to take into consideration that his tirade against Anwar Ibrahim would return Anwar into his original environment. Mahathir's primary concern should be to determine when to get out of the political scene as he is tempted to overstay his welcome.
