Making money: Khmer Rouge economic strategy takes shape
Article Abstract:
Cambodia's revolutionary faction Khmer Rouge has started laying out its economic plan with the creation of its own currency. It is also trying to establish autonomy in its present areas of control by bribing its people with lands to till. These developments come as a surprise toobservers as, ironically, the Khmer Rouge is well-remembered for its murderous regime and the abolition of its own currency. This could only mean that politically and economically, the Khmer Rouge is trying to assert its legitimate presence as a state within the Cambodian state by having its own currency and head of state.

Face the facts: interview, insider account link Ieng Sary to killings
Article Abstract:
Ieng Sary, who served as vice prime minister of Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge, claims that he was not involved in atrocities committed by the regime. Stephen Heder, a scholar from London, England's School of African and Oriental Studies, argues that it is not plausible that Ieng Sary was unaware of the atrocities. He was also responsible for diplomats who worked for him in the foreign ministry, many of who were sent to die. Evidence has come from a survivor of a camp of Ieng Sary's role.

Out of the loop: Ieng Sary denies role in Khmer Rouge atrocities
Article Abstract:
Ieng Sary was previously the Khmer Rouge foreign minister and is seeking to distance himself from Pol Pot and atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge. He argues that he did not know about the atrocities and that Pol Pot was insane. Cambodia's Democratic National Union Movement's Research and Documentation Center has published a document setting out Ieng Sary's defense. His faction controls the north west of Cambodia so he will have to gain acceptance for peace to be achieved.
