Malaysia Inc.: bailout or accountability?

The Malaysian government's decision to purchase United Engineers Malaysia (UEM) for 3.8 billion ringett has left many confused about the intentions involved. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed said the move was in the public's interest, but UEM coincidentally happens to be a component of Malaysia-owned Renong, which is severely debt-ridden. The chief concern is that the government is purchasing UEM as a bailout.
