Malaysian dilemmas
Article Abstract:
Malaysia celebrates 40 years of independence in Aug 1997. The country has made enormous progress, both economically and in all other respects, during the 40 years, but Malaysians are conscious that progress has brought challenges. The Malaysian President has put forward ambitious plans for Malaysia's continuing development towards fully developed nation status by 2020. Some experts believe the level of development is possible, but that the nation must address problems, including corruption, racial tensions and the increasing influence of Islam, which threaten to undermine progress.

Calling Doctor Daim
Article Abstract:
The Chinese should be permitted to purchase into strategic industries currently controlled by Malays, according to Daim Zainuddin, economic adviser to the Malaysian government and executive director of the newly formed National Economic Action Council. He would approve Chinese takeovers of Malay businesses that are experiencing difficulties. He would also allow foreigners to become involved as long as they bring in capital. This view is likely to be opposed by some members of the United Malays National Organization, of which he is treasurer.

Oh for a bailout
Article Abstract:
The economic crisis in Malaysia is having a negative impact on some of the country's most prominent business leaders. Tajudin Ramli, head of Malaysia Airlines and telecommunications concern Technology Resources Industries, must deal with heavy debt burdens at both companies, even though they have healthy cash flows. The share price of Konsortium Perkapalan, the shipping company owned by Mirzan Mahathir, has declined dramatically, while Azman Hashim, head of Arab-Malaysian Group, may become the first indebted businessman to be rescued.
