Manage and monitor
Article Abstract:
The British environment minister, John Prescott, faces the problem of how demand for housing can be satisfied at a time when there is opposition to usage of the countryside to building new homes. Demand for new housing is partly a result ofinternal migration from northern England, and also due to Londoners moving elsewhere in the south east, and foreigners moving to London. Demographic and social change have also led to increases in household numbers. Prescott is seeking to increase usage of brownfield sites, and has changed to five-year policy reviews, rather than seeking to plan 20 years ahead.

Out of reach
Article Abstract:
There is a shortage of affordable homes in London, England, and the main housing strategist for central government, John Prescott, favors home ownership, London mayoral candidate, Ken Livingstone, in contrast, favors more public housing. Teachers, firefighters and nurses are unable to buy homes in London and south eastern England, and central government aims to help them through measures such as interest free loans. Targets have not been set for lower cost homes, but the market is likely to adjust to prices that people can pay.
