Managerial defections, promotion criteria and firm growth
Article Abstract:
Defection of talented managers of a firm can hurt that firm's growth. Companies must have an established and credible promotion criterion to insure itself against defections and regrettable managerial promotion of incapable managers. A company's imperfect information on junior managers' leadership abilities especially at the later stages of apprenticeship can lead to defection. The lack of a precise and credible promotion criterion can generate interdependence between junior manager's incentives to invest on industry-specific abilities and the parent company's growth strategy.
