Managers of China funds aim for more freedom of choice
Article Abstract:
Managers of China equity funds are optimistic about the mainland in 1996 but they would like to have a greater number of stocks to choose from. There are only 40 B shares available to foreign investors on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges, 30 H shares of mainland companies listed in Hong Kong and a few Chinese firms listed in the US and other overseas exchanges. The shortage of stocks has forced many fund managers to look to Hong Kong, Taiwanese and Singaporean companies with interests in the mainland to fill out their portfolios.

Lipper sees sales of Asia funds tied to U.S. market
Article Abstract:
New York, NY-based analyst A. Michael Lipper believes that US investors will continue to avoid Asia-Pacific mutual funds pending a substantial improvement in the US stock market and in sentiments towards China. Lipper stated that investors are presently exercising caution but this could change if they begin feeling more confident about stocks in general. In addition, most news about China have been negative and foreign investors would need more reassurance before committing their money.

Home-field advantage holds for Taiwan funds
Article Abstract:
Statistics show that Taiwan's locally managed funds outperformed those managed elsewhere during 1995. Many experts believe that this performance record, together with cheap prices and the ongoing opening of the market, is enough reason for foreign investors to bring their money in. The above-average success of Taiwanese fund managers is attributed to bigger on-ground research teams and their willingness to move quickly in and out of the markets.
