The net profit of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M) rose by 20.13 percent on a 14.02 percent rise in turnover in 1997-98. Gross profit went up by 12.23 percent and the board declared a dividend of 55 percent to its shareholders compared to 50 percent in the previous year. Lakshmi Auto Components Ltd, promoted by TVS Suzuki, made a turnover of Rs32.85 crore, an operating profit of Rs16.38 crore and a net profit of Rs8.23 crore in 1997-98. Its earning per share was Rs9.17 on an equity of Rs9 crore. Its return on net worth was 31 percent. It is projected to post sales of Rs52.11 crore and a net profit of Rs10.21 crore in 1998-99. It plans to come out with a 1:2 rights share offer. The share will be offered at a premium of Rs10, aggregating Rs9 crore. It is increasing the equity capital by Rs4.5 crore. The equity capital of Lakshmi Auto Components Ltd will increase to Rs13.5 crore from Rs9 crore after the rights share issue. TVS Suzuki has 65 percent stake in Lakshmi Auto Components Ltd. Lakshmi Auto Components Ltd plans to increase its automobile components production capacity to 1 lakh per month from 65,000 per month. The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs43 crore. Lakshmi Auto Components Ltd plans to use Rs14 crore of cash accrual and Rs20 crore of term loans for the expansion project. (rk)

ASHOK LEYLAND TRIMS LOSS BY 32%

Ashok Leyland Ltd has reduced its net loss by 32 percent to Rs13.08 crore in the quarter ended December 31, 1998 compared to a net loss of Rs19.24 crore in the quarter ended December 31, 1997. It has improved its net sales to Rs430 crore from Rs413.33 and sales volumes to 6359 vehicles from 6160 vehicles. It has posted a gross profit of Rs6.14 crore in the quarter ended December 31, 1998 against a loss of Rs1.41 crore in the quarter ended December 31, 1997. Interest costs declined to Rs23.46 crore from Rs26.55 crore while depreciation increased to Rs19.23 crore from Rs17.82 crore.
