Mannesmann case is dealt a setback; judge says bonus awards for company executives broke no criminal laws

The German judge presiding over the Mannesmann AG case, including codefendant Deutsche Bank CEO Josef Ackermann, has ruled that the company broke no German civil laws when it awarded 57 million Euros in bonuses and pension packages to departing Mannesmann executives. The payouts were paid as part of Britain's Vodophone Group PLS's takeover of Mannesmann in 2000.

Germany faces leadership standoff
Article Abstract:
Germany is in a political crisis with a standoff between Angela Merkel and Gerhard Schroeder, and the possibility of another election in the future and possibly another unclear winner. The political uncertainty could hurt the economic community. Gerhard Schroeder received 35 percent of the vote and Angela Merkel, 36 percent.
