A bit warm down here: New Zealand politics heats up the interest rates
Article Abstract:
New Zealand's interest rates are jumping higher amid political turbulence, reflecting international concerns about the New Zealand First Party and pushing homeowners' mortgage rates up. In the first six months of 1996 rates for 10-year bonds rose from 100 basis points, or 1%, above the US rate, to 200 basis points higher, and some analysts say they could go up another 50 points. The New Zealand economy is thriving on foreign investment, but that means the new, populist party's anti-foreigner rhetoric has real results.

Embarrassment of riches: can New Zealand's film industry survive success?
Article Abstract:
New Zealand's film industry may be unable to sustain its recent success as international acclaim generates offers of money that draw directors and actors overseas. Nevertheless, a host of new filmmakers are emerging to sustain the country's developing tradition of low-budget, creative movies written by the director. Worldwide successes in the past decade include Peter Jackson's 'Heavenly Creatures,' Peter Wells' 'Desperate Remedies,' Jane Campion's 'The Piano,' and Lee Tamahori's 'Once Were Warriors.'
